In Matthew 4:1-11 Jesus gives us the key ingredient on how we can resist the devil.

The story here tells us that Jesus had now finished His fasting in the wilderness for 40 days and 40 night and he was hungry. (Matthew 4:2).
Now lets be real......some of us if we haven't even for the entire day feel hungry and we get mad some of us feel sick and other things and this is just one day. Now what you think will happen if we fasted 40 full days of no eating and drinking and to make matters worst we were in the wilderness. Now you could imagine what Jesus was feeling.

But after spending these days the devil came and tempt Him. Now there is something that I want to point out and it is found in verse Matthew 4:6. And it says, this is the devil speaking here " If you are the song of God......He will command his angels concerning you and they will lift you up in their hands........." If we look at Psalm 91:11 "For he will command his angels concerning you to guard........"
The exact same quote the devil uses in Matthew 4 is the same verse/ quote that is written in Psalm 91:11. What does this show? It shows that the devil knows the word of GOD. He knows the scriptures and he will try to use them against us but let examine what Jesus did to get him to flee.
Jesus was tempted three time:-
1. Turning the stone into bread (v3)
2. Commanding the angels to lift him up (v6)
3 Giving Jesus the kingdoms of the word if He would bow down and worship satan. (v8-9)

In all three cases if we read the verses after we see that in each instance Jesus battled the devil with a scripture/ verse from in the bible.
1. "...man does not live on bread alone but on every word that comes from the mouth of theLord." (Deut 8:3)
2. "Do not put your Lord God to the test" (Deut 6:16)
3. "Fear the Lord your God,serve him Only" (Deut 6:13)
Jesus quoted from the bible each time the devil tempted Him. As a result of this the devil flew from him. "Then the devil left him......." (v11)
In order to defeat the devil we need to use the WORD of God, because it is the word of God that the devil is using against to trick/ tempt us.
We need to resist the devil and he will surely flee from us.
Some of you who are fasting remember to use the word of God. Most times after we have finished fasting and we are weak that is when the devil comes in but lucky for us we have the word of God to defeat him. For those who are not fasting during this Lent period, continue to learn the scriptures and mediate on God so that we can resist the devil when he comes.
